How to change the Lotus Notes new mail tune on a Mac
Written by TimsterC on Thu 16-Jul-09 – 10:13 -So I have Notes 8.5.x installed on my Mac and the new mail tune that plays by default is too loud and really nasty. So I set about finding how to change it.
I found this setting hidden in the hundreds of options we now have to play with in the “Preferences”section of the menus.
So to get to this screen you need to press the Apple key and comma in the Notes client. Then select the Mail drop down arrow and “Sending and Receiving”. The screen should look like this one below.
Highlighted you will see the “Browse” button that will let you pick a new tune.
Enjoy the nice Apple sounds.

The Domino XPages cometh
Written by TimsterC on Tue 26-Aug-08 – 9:51 -Well I’m back from my holiday/vacation and I have a stack load of work to do, but to add to the grief I have to go to Dublin on Wednesday night for a 2 day training course on Domino XPages. I wholly intend to run this in IBM Hursley for Business Partners soon. So keep watching for more info on that.
Here is a description of what Domino XPages are from the IBM developerWorks Wiki on IBM Lotus Domino web Application Development.
An XPage is a new design element based on JavaServer Faces (JSF) technology that lets developers create Web 2.0 enabled pages for use in Web browser applications running on Domino 8.5. XPages remove the barrier of Web programming in Domino by providing advanced page design capabilities and complete control of the generated markup. They also allow access to any kind of data and provide an easy method for localizing applications. XPages includes the following features:
* AJAX enabled (for example, partial page refresh, type ahead capability, and so on)
* Advanced Web control library (tabbed panel, and so on)
* Full support for styling by using CSS
* Fully extensible by using custom controls (composite controls or Java-based controls) or JSF extensions
* Support for multiple clients (Web, rich client, and so on)
* JavaScript scripting language support for client-side and server-side action
* Pre-built simple actions provided for most common cases
* Direct access to Java libraries on the server

NotesTip = In a style to which you have become acustomed.
Written by TimsterC on Fri 10-Feb-06 – 23:02 -So how frustrating is it to have to open up all your Notes applications every time you start Notes? I know, it happens to me too. So just for us, here’s a way of making sure that your Notes is just the way you like it every time you open it up.
Down the left hand side of your Notes client there are some bookmark folders. You need the one that says “More Bookmarks” when you hover your mouse over it.
In that folder create a new folder called “Startup”. All you have to do then is drag and drop your favourite applications into that folder. The next time you open Notes they will automatically be there waiting for you.
If you have Notes 7.0, then you can do it another way. In the menu File / Preferences / User Preferences dialog box, there is an option for “save window state on exit”. So just make sure that box is ticked and whatever state you leave Notes in, it’ll be like that when you open it back up again.
So two ways to make you happy from just one posting.

NotesTip = Catagorised View Navigation
Written by TimsterC on Fri 10-Feb-06 – 11:13 -In a view with lots of catagories and sub catagories, navigating by pressig the twisties can be a real pain, especially if your mouse is not too great or playing up.
So I use the keyboard alot sometimes, and I’ve been using these for a long while. You might find them useful.
- Expand all & “+” (plus)
- Collapse all & “-” (minus)
- Expand selected and children “*” (asterix)
- Expand selected “+” (plus)
- Collapse selected “-” (minus)
p.s. they work best on a standard (i.e. non-laptop) keyboard.
;o)

NotesTip = As if by magic, the Hidden Views appear.
Written by TimsterC on Fri 10-Feb-06 – 8:22 -So there I am wracking my brain to think of the next tip for you, when I have to go and look at the directory of a Domino server to find out why the Web Single Sign On doc is not apearing.
So I open up the workspace (I know it’s old school, but so am I;) ) and hold down + while double clicking the directory icon on the workspace.
What happens when you do this, is that the hidden views appear in the folder and view list on the left hand side.
Cool huh.
Take it easy ;o)

NotesTip = Smaller Image Sizes
Written by TimsterC on Fri 03-Feb-06 – 17:22 -This one’s from a colleague of mine.
I’ve come across another new – and not highly advertised feature introduced in 6.5.4 and beyond which might interest you.
Add OptimizeImagePasteSize=1 to your notes.ini and any image pasted into a Rich Text Field in a notes document will be inserted in a compressed GIF format which is 95+ % smaller than the default .bmp screen shot format).
Thanks to Karen for this NotesTip

NotesTip = Easy Connection Docs
Written by TimsterC on Fri 03-Feb-06 – 14:58 -File/Database/Open or
In the server name field type in the IP address of the server you want to connect to. (Ask the Administrator or try a ping of the server name if you don’t know it)
Open a database from that server. (names.nsf should let you in)
WOW
You have a connection document to that server in your local Address Book.
I’m not sure if this works before Notes 6.x, if it does let me know.
